Roman Statkowski Piano Pieces
Magdalena Lisak

"With his profound intelligence and eternally youthful, warm heart, He was able to understand that in the history of art, only form changes—and must change—striving tirelessly along the intricate paths of human progress, while the true essence remains ever the same: born from a sense of the depth and mystery of life, through selfless, steadfast work in the name of an unselfish ideal." Thus wrote Karol Szymanowski of his older friend, with whom he shared frequent, lengthy conversations and a common realm of values—similar views on the vital current of art that avoids fashionable formal and stylistic constraints.

A monographic album dedicated to an artist who eludes the conventional ordering of composers according to the rules of progress, and whose oeuvre remains a testament to profound nobility and inner serenity, is an undoubted achievement of Magdalena Lisak, one of Poland's most outstanding pianists. She is also connected to the composer through an autobiographical thread, as her grandfather—a distinguished pianist, conductor, and composer, Zbigniew Dymmek—studied under Roman Statkowski at the Warsaw Conservatory. She restores to the modern era the work of a composer who has undeservedly fallen to the margins of Polish musical history.
